一般最常見的「痣」，是「黑色素細胞痣」，可能是先天就有或後天產生。痣並非完全不會改變，可能隨著年齡增長而增多，或是顏色深淺也會有改變。產生痣的原因和遺傳、體質、或太陽照射都有關係。青春期或懷孕也會影響到痣的數量或顏色。

一、醫學上一般把黑色素細胞痣分成三個種類：

1.接合痣：深度較淺，表面看來較平坦。通常呈現棕色或黑色，痣細胞只分布在表皮層和真皮層的交界。

2.複合痣：深度介於淺層、中層之間，微微突起，通常呈現棕色。痣細胞分布在表皮層和真皮層。

3.皮內痣：深度介於中、深層，外表更為突起，通常為淡棕色。痣細胞完全在真皮層中。
